Smartphone market is filled with lots of budget range phones these days. JIPL added new competition by introducing Coolpad to the market. We tested Mega 2.5D for two weeks and here are our full review. Our team conducted full test with battery, display, performance, benchmark and all. Our initial impression for this new phone is already published.
It is very new brand in the Nepali market but they are offering quite good phones at a very good price. Coolpad Mega 2.5D is all what the name says. It hold a 5.5” IPS LCD screen with 720×1280 resolution. Screen is huge, thus it falls under phablet category. It does requires some maneuvering to control the phone.
Design: Name 2.5D comes from the screen type. It actually is a type of glass at top which has slight curve at the edges of screen. Its is made up of plastic and even the back is non removable back with somewhat metallic finish. Company logo resides at bottom with sensors and front camera top. It is very slim and light considering its power and we like it but the black borders at screen should be trimmed next time.
Specs/ Performance: Coolpad Mega 2.5D features Mediatek SOC with quad core processor clocked at 1 GHz. There is 3 GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage and SD card support up to 128 GB. RAM and ROM size is very respectable for phone of such price. A 2500 mAh battery is fitted under non-removable back. It gives more than 3 hours screen on time with minimal use.
We can enjoy smooth multitasking due to the sufficient RAM space. It does requires some polishing for better usage of its resources. Our team tried gaming and work with this phone. There are some hiccups but the phone didn’t heat as expected. We did some benchmark and here are the results.
Camera: No phone can be judged without checking its camera. Mega 2.5 provides 8 MP cameras at both sides. This is good but a 13 MP sensor at back would have been rocking. Both of the modules are capable of recording videos at 720p with Auto HDR. The images are vibrant and with Pro Mode macro shots are fantastic. Selfies do look great and age recognition software also works very well.
UI/ Software: This new smartphone is running with Android Marshmallow with CoolUI. Personally I am fan of stock Android so I mostly use launcher which works very well. The UI has its own pros but there lots of features and functionality. As an Engineer, we liked the presence of Compass. We were disappointed by presence of few bloatware. Company responded to this and said that FOTA updates will be rolled out to remove those. Next batch of phones will be free from such software as well.
Features: There are many sensors such as C-Button, Light Sensor for auto brightness, Accelerator and much more. Most budget mobiles don’t offer LED notification and Fast charging but this one does. Users can choose between Intelligent charging and Fast charging option after connecting the USB cable.
4G is supported by this handset with Dual SIM feature. The SIM tray is hybrid which is a down point. Companies should remove hybrid SIM and simply have two SIM tray and a SD card slot. There is no fingerprint sensor or Gyroscope inside.
There are lots of space for improvements. They can start by installing fingerprint scanner and Gyroscope. It is the demand of youth because they want security and VR capability. Gaming and multitasking is good as expected but a bit throttled by processor. Even thought the external memory card support is low, we do get OTG support. We are not complaining because there are compromise to make a budget phones.
Coolpad Mega is meant for people who want big screen for entertainment. Its specs hold your daily needs with ease. Both camera are capable of fulfilling normal photography demands. We inspire you to explore more with Pro Mode. It currently costs Rs 16,496 and is one of the best phones in the market.
