Nepal Telecom ADSL

Nepal Telecom ADSL

Nepal Telecom’s ADSL service is one of the most popular broadband internet services in Nepal. It was once very popular and provided the best value in the market for home users. NTC has been providing internet service for a long time. At first, there was dial-up internet service which many of the older landline users know. Then came Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) from Nepal Telecom which provided internet using the same copper telephone line at faster speeds. The service is still in use and here are all the available NTC ADSL internet packages with their price.

Nepal Doorsanchar Company Limited or Nepal Telcom has various services in their portfolio. They have been providing internet service through different mediums for a long time. Among such mediums, ADSL is a very popular technology that arrived after dial-up. Here in this article, we shall go in-depth about all internet packages, speed, price, and technical details.

What is ADSL technology? How does it work?

Asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) is a technology that uses telephone copper wire to provide internet or data communication. This technology uses the same or existing PSTN landline wire for internet or data transfer. Simply explaining, the ISP or Nepal Telecom sends both telephone signal and internet signals using different bands over a telephone wire.

NTC has big optical fiber connections with international gateways of Indian and Chinese telecom companies. The internet connection from such a big and faster connection is distributed regionally and then to different exchanges. The local telephone exchange sends both telephone and internet to your local DSLAM which uses multiplexing techniques to provide both internet and telephone service via copper line. In the home, a DSL filter or “Splitter” is used to separate frequency bands of telephone and ADSL. Then the output of ADSL goes into the router or modem and other output goes to a telephone set.

As the name suggests ADSL is asymmetric so the upstream is higher than downstream. This is why NTC ADSL speed for download is also higher than upload. If you want to dive into more technicality, NTC uses ADSL2+ technology also known as “G.992.5” where the maximum downstream is 24 Mbps.

Nepal Telecom ADSL Internet Packages: Tariff

Nepal Telecom has updated its service offer, packages, and prices many times. Here are some of the packages or NTC ADSL internet price for home customers.

NTC ADSL Unlimited Package

The company used to serve different packages to the customers but now there is just one package for all users. Everyone can now only purchase a 5 Mbps unlimited plan. The base speed of NTC ADSL was upgraded to 5 Mbps in 2018 and it has remained the same since then. So here is the NTC ADSL price for unlimited packages.

Package SpeedValidityPrice
5 Mbps1 monthRs 800
5 Mbps6 monthsRs 4,300
5 Mbps12 Months (1 Year)Rs 8,000

If we assess the pricing, it is better to pay for the whole year at once to enjoy a discount worth 2 months. The 5 Mbps unlimited plan provides around 450 KB/s download speed on multiple sides including YouTube, P2P traffic, web surfing, Amazon Prime, and more. Most importantly this ADSL service doesn’t have any restrictions of FUP as found in FTTH service. However, in order to enjoy actual possible speed, you need to be near the office or exchange, have an ideal connection, have no broken wires, and have healthy hardware. Still, you may have some issues, for that case follow our ADSL troubleshooting guide for connection issues.

Volume Based Service

Nepal Telecom has been providing volume-based ADSL service for a long time. The volume-based packages are very cheap compared to mobile data. These are useful for people who have less data demand and want to pay less.

Data VolumeSpeedValidityPrice
15 GB5 Mbps30 DaysRs 200
25 GB5 Mbps30 DaysRs 300
40 GB5 Mbps30 DaysRs 400

In these packages, users can enjoy the set amount of data for 30 days period. Users can enjoy the same 5 Mbps speed in all of their packages these days. In earlier times, volume-based users would get higher speed than unlimited users and they would also have the option to change their speed through a customer self-care system.

Recharge and Balance Check for NTC ADSL Internet Packages

All the customers can pay their bills and do NTC ADSL recharge using online and offline methods. First and foremost, you can go to the nearest office and pay the bills at the counter. Second, you can also use recharge cards available in the market to pay bills using the company’s web recharge portal. You can also use Visa, MasterCard, and Unionpay cards to pay through the company’s online recharge portal. The third is paying bills using online wallets such as eSewa, Khalti, IME Pay, etc. Fourth is recharging or clearing bills using bank apps directly or using ebanking portal of banks and financial institutions.

Users can use the Web Selfcare portal of the company to check validity, data use, bandwidth, and remaining volume. However, users need to make an account with self care portal to use the service. The portal is quite problematic and outdated, so it might not be of good use.

Users can easily do NTC ADSL balance check and validity inquiry by simply sending SMS from mobile. In case of ADSL validity, send VL*NTADSLxxxxxxxxx to 1415 and in case of ADSL, balance inquiry send BL*NTADSLxxxxxxxxx to 1415. The xxxxxxxxx is the telephone number with area code and 0. For example, if the phone number is of Kathmandu and the number is 4258233. Then users need to type VL*NTADSL014258233 and send it to 1415.

Older Nepal Telecom ADSL Packages: Price and History

Nepal Telecom started ADSL service back in 2008 (2065 BS). The company provided 128 Kbps and 256 Kbps to home users. It was a massive hit because people could actually have solid broadband internet in their homes. The cost of a 128 Kbps connection was Rs 1,017/month and the cost of 256 Kbps was Rs 1,695. In 2011, NTC upgraded the 128 Kbps to 192 Kbps and 256 Kbps to 384 Kbps at the same price. The company was also providing 512 Kbps connection to volume-based users, and unlimited 512 Kbps to corporate users, institutions, and offices.

In 2017, NTC upgraded the base speed of 192 Kbps to 256 Kbps, 384 Kbps to 512 Kbps, and 512 Kbps to 768 kbps. Then again the speed was upgraded to 1 Mbps. Finally, in 2018, the basic speed was upgraded to 5 Mbps on its 14th Anniversary. Slowly all other services merged and only one unlimited package existed. During this time, the prices went up and down as per the situation.

Registration and Internet Connection Application

If you want to get an ADSL internet connection then follow the below-given steps.

  1. Go to your nearest NTC office with passport-size photos, a copy of citizenship, and older bills if you have them. Bills may be used as proof that you have cleared all dues.
  2. If you already have a telephone connection, then fill out the ADSL registration form available at the office. Attach your passport size photo, copy of citizenship, provide signature and fingerprints.
  3. In case you need a new telephone line, then apply for ADSL as well at the same time. It is very important to have a telephone line at home for ADSL service.
  4. Submit all documents and let the officers check the availability of connections.
  5. After confirmation, pay the required fees for the new connection of ADSL which is Rs 200 for unlimited connection and Rs 300 for volume-based. Earlier it was Rs 500 for all connections.
  6. If you are connecting the first time then, the charges of the telephone line and ADSL combined is a bit higher. The estimate will be provided by assessing wire required by field staffs.
  7. After paying for the new connection and monthly charge, take the receipts and wait for activation
  8. Purchase an ADSL router/modem from the market and bring that to the office for settings. You can set the NTC ADSL username and password yourself as well. Previously the username and password both used to be a combination of the phone number (eg: adsl4258233). Connect the router to a PC using a LAN cable and open the login page in the web browser by typing 192.168.1.1.
  9. Setup the splitter, router, and telephone lines as necessary and wait for connections to be set up. After setup, the router should show steady light on the “ADSL” indicator. After that “Internet” indicator should also blink continuously.

Further Information and Customer Care

After the order of NTA, Nepal Telecom has also allotted customer care service. Previously the automatic system was used to register complaints. Now, human interaction is possible and issues can be discussed. If you want to know more about connections in your area, then it is better to go to the local office.

However, if there is a problem with your internet connection or line then call on the outside or ADSL contact number of the nearby NTC office. Those numbers are available at the office. So when you go there for bill payment or connection, ask and note them down. In case you don’t have a local number, you can call on NTC ADSL customer care number “198” and register your complaint easily.

In our view, ADSL has seen better days and it is in the EOL period. The FTTH service from Nepal Telecom is much better now. Also, the company has stopped giving copper cable connections, instead, they are providing everyone with fiber connections these days. We have also done a complete review of the NTC FTTH service to provide a good idea as well. So it is better to shift to the latest technology and get NT Fiber.
