The spec list shows that it is a high-end smartphone with a powerful set of hardware. We can see big, fast display, powerful processor and a good set of cameras. Now let us discuss all of these in brief.
Processor, Internals and Power
The OnePlus 8 Pro has Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor with 8 cores and Adreno 650 GPU. It has 8 GB LPDDR5 base RAM and 128 GB internal storage. The top model comes with 12 GB RAM and 256 GB storage. Snapdragon 865 is a processor with a lot of power for all types of work, games, apps, and entertainment. It is a 5G capable chip so the phone also has 5G capabilities, antennas modems.
OnePlus 8 Pro is using LPDDR5 RAM which is much faster than LPDDR4X RAM used in other devices in the market. The company uses UFS 3.0 with Turbo White which leads to better speed than normal UFS storage. By the way, there is no external SD card support in this device. But we wish that they would consider having SD card support. However, all these core hardware makes a solid flagship system. The hardware is new and very powerful for all types of tasks. To power all of this, the mobile has a 4510 mAh battery with 30W Warp fast charging. There is 30W wireless charging and reverse charging support as well.
Display and Cameras
The front side of the phone consists of 6.78″ Fluid AMOLED screen with a hole punch at the left side. The panel has a QHD+ resolution of 1440×3168. This is a fast panel with a 120 Hz refresh rate. High refresh rate screens with higher-touch sampling give amazing user experience. Opening apps, swiping, and overall usage feels faster and more smooth. The screen is also HDR10+ certified which means users can enjoy great video content from different OTT and sources. HDR videos have vivid colors, deeper blacks, and better contrast.
The front hole-punch has 16 MP camera with f/2.5 aperture. It can record 1920×1080 videos at maximum capacity and has EIS for stabilization. The backside has all cameras at the center. The main sensor is 48 MP wide-angle with OIS and PDAF. Next, we have a second 48 MP ultrawide angle camera with 116˚ FOV, third we have 8 MP telephoto with an optical zoom capability of 3x and digital zoom capability of 30x. Then the fourth one is a 5 MP color filter infrared camera that has been disabled due to many controversies.
OnePlus 8 Pro is a flagship so we have camera features of the same standard. The phone can record 4K videos at 60 fps and 1080p videos at 240 fps. There is EIS so the videos are also stabilized. Users can take benefit of Dynamic video recording and Pro Mode for better photos and videos.
Other Features
OnePlus 8 Pro has a lot of new features. These are the small things that add up to make a good phone altogether. First of all, there is WiFi 6. This is new WiFi technology and standard that offers more than double data transfer speeds. It is quite new but it is expanding and having a phone ready for new technology is good. Then there is Smart 5G which helps to shift from 5G to non 5G networks when needed to save battery.
The software or the Oxygen OS comes built-in with Game Mode and Fnatic Mode for gamers. These modes help to optimize CPU, GPU, RAM, battery, and network to provide a better gaming experience. Background works are closed to provide more resources for games. These optimizations and resource management help to achieve better performance. The phone also has a new Bluetooth 5.1 module, dual-band A-GPS, and optical fingerprint scanner. It is quite fast compared to optical scanners of other companies.
Impressions
OnePlus 8 Pro is a smartphone with top features, great specs, fast processor, and latest features. It is truly a flagship phone and not just a flagship killer. The processor is one of the fastest in the market, cameras are also very powerful and the screen technology is also on point with AMOLED and 120Hz refresh rate. Now it comes to value and cost. OnePlus 8 Pro price in Nepal starts at Rs 1,10,000 which is quite high than the international price. The equivalent price in India comes around Rs 88,000. So if we compare this price to Nepali MRP, it is very high.
We know that there are import costs, margins, and taxes but other companies don’t charge this much. Currently, this is one of the most expensive phones in the market. OnePlus 8 Pro is a very good device but the price in Nepal is quite high. There are other options in the market as well which match the international cost. However, if you really need Stock Android experience, the fluidity of Oxygen OS, and OnePlus product then only it is good.
One thing to notice is that it is the only phone in the market to offer Snapdragon 865. No other companies have flagship with this processor. But in terms of cost and value, we hope that the company tries to get the price down to the international level. Then only it can be a recommended device for the price to performance ratio.
