Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge: Price, Power, Audit

Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge in a showroom

Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge have been released in Nepal. Many people have bought it and we also used it many times. We tested both of these phones and they are amazing. These show a significant upgrade over the Galaxy S5. The price of Galaxy S6 is Rs 64,000 in Nepal or ($640). On the other hand, the price of Galaxy S6 Edge in Nepal is Rs 75,000 ($750). These are interesting phones and this is our analysis of both of them.

As a flagship phone the S6 has all the top-notch features that anyone would crave. Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge both have 5.1 inches display having a resolution of 1440×2560. Display type is Super AMOLED 577 PPI pixel density. The S6 has a normal flat screen but Edge has a curved screen at side. Screen protection on both phones is is Corning Gorilla Glass 4. These set are powered by Samsung’s own Exynos 7420 octa core processor. It consists of 1.5 GHz and 2.1 GHz quad core chips which totally make 8 cores. The RAM is 3 GB but storage is now more than double. Different storage models are available with 32 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB.

Camera and battery: The primary camera is 16 MP sensor with f/1.9 aperture. It is capable of shooting 1080p videos at 60 fps, 720p videos at 120 fps and 2160p at 30 fps. Highest possible pictures resolution is 2988X5312. The front secondary camera is 5 MP capable of recording 1440p videos at 30fps and also dual video. The normal Galaxy S6 has 2550 mAH battery whereas S6 Edge has 2600 mAh battery. This is a small difference but we appreciate it. There is wireless charging support in this phone but only some models have it.

Design, Performance, and Audit

Samsung has made a radical change to the design. Till the last generation, we had plastic body with removable backs and battery. Now it is all metal and glass which makes the phone more fragile. We have to admit that these new phones look exceptionally beautiful in hand. Due to the glass back, these new phones are able to provide wireless charging. There is normal 15 W fast charging support as well.

Since Galaxy Note 4 we got into the realm of the high-resolution screen. The already amazing SAMOLED screens now look better than ever. Color, brightness, vividness, and saturation are so great that viewfinder shows a better and punchy colored view than reality. We are getting 4K video recording feature in both of these phones and it is quite amazing. Still, there is a limit in record time due to the heating issue. But the addition of slow motion and high frame rate videos is an appreciable upgrade.

There is a fingerprint sensor embedded on the home button and it works very well. Both S6 versions also have big collection of sensors like heart rate monitor, compass, gyroscope, barometer, etc. One of the most important upgrades is in storage. The base model is now 32 GB then there are 64 and 128 GB variant as well. This is good because they are using faster memory type but we are disappointed that they took away SD card support. Both S6 models are also running new UI with Android Lollipop.

Upgrades and Changes

The flagship phones always show new features. For instance, in Samsung Galaxy S4 we saw reading mode that would scroll the page as we go down. This feature would turn the display off if the reader’s eyes close while feeling sleepy. These features worked on eye tracking. This time Samsung introduced its new feature for paying that is Samsung Pay. The new Fingerprint sensor is also introduced which is PayPal certified. This is good but we haven’t even seen much use of NFC payments till now. Samsung Pay also has proprietary MST technology that can work without NFC, WiFi Direct or Bluetooth.

Additional features include popular My Knox, S Voice support, dual-band WiFi, Screen mirroring, etc. Samsung has now introduced the Nano SIM and this is a new form factor. Many people will need to change their SIM cards for this. The chassis is of metal just like we saw on Galaxy Alpha series. Back is also covered using Gorilla Glass 4 which gives it a solid and good look.

Final Cover and Impression

Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are hands down the best looking phones we have seen in a while. Its glass and metal design looks amazing. Moreover, the S6 Edge looks great with such curves. However, the curve takes some screen real estate so it is taking away some reading or typing space. There is also gearing when light falls in certain angles. But for the looks its get all the stars.

Both smartphones have top-level hardware. There is a very fast processor, higher 3 GB RAM, and larget storage size. We like the fact that there is 32 GB minimum but we are very disappointed that they are not giving micro SD card support. We hope they bring it back again next time. Else it may be a deal breaker for some storage junky. The camera is also very good with a high pixel density sensor that record photos and videos at very high resolutions. Low light photography is also a bit improved.

Samsung has brought some positive changes but we lost splash proof which was in Galaxy S5. Except for some things, we are getting really good phones. The price that the company is asking is also higher. Experts predict that the cost of high end smartphones is going to rise from now. So if you want a shiny beautiful phone with all top notch specs and hardware go for anyone of the new S6 models. If you want to get flagship phone at cheap then go for Note 4 or older Galaxy S5.
